What Is Smart Call Routing?
Smart Call Routing is the umbrella of features that control how incoming calls are distributed across your account. Rather than a single phone ringing, calls can be queued, distributed to groups, filtered by time of day, or forwarded dynamically across SIP extensions and PSTN destinations — all configurable without any coding or monthly add-on fees.
Four Core Routing Components
| Call Queues Hold callers in order of arrival with on-hold music. Agents retrieve calls by dialing the queue number from their SIP device. No limit on queue size or number of simultaneous queues. | Ring Groups Ring multiple extensions simultaneously or in sequence. If no one answers within the timeout, calls fall through to voicemail, another group, or an IVR. | Time Conditions Route calls based on day of week and time of day. Send calls to your IVR during business hours, to voicemail at night, and to a weekend message on Saturdays and Sundays. |
| Dynamic Follow-Me (15 Modes) Change where your calls forward in real time — without touching your SIP device. 15 forwarding modes include: forward always, forward on busy, forward on no answer, forward not registered, sequential ring, simultaneous ring, time-based forward, and more. Changes take effect immediately via your portal or via feature codes. | ||
Dynamic Follow-Me Forwarding Modes
IsraelNumber supports 15 distinct call forwarding modes, giving you precise control over where calls land under every condition:
| Mode | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Forward Always | All incoming calls go directly to the forwarding destination, bypassing the SIP device |
| Forward on Busy | Forwards only when your SIP extension is engaged on another call |
| Forward on No Answer | Forwards if the call is not answered within the configured timeout |
| Forward Not Registered | Forwards if your SIP device is offline or not registered to the server |
| Simultaneous Ring | Rings your SIP extension and external number at the same time; first to answer gets the call |
| Sequential Ring | Rings your SIP extension first, then the external number if unanswered |
| Time-Based Forward | Applies forwarding rules only during defined hours or days |
| Forward to Voicemail | Sends caller directly to voicemail without ringing |
| Forward to IVR | Routes caller to a configured IVR menu |
| Forward to Queue | Places caller directly into a call queue |
| Forward to Conference | Drops caller into a live conference room |
| Forward to External Number | Sends call to any mobile or landline worldwide |
| DND (Do Not Disturb) | Rejects all calls; callers hear busy or go to voicemail |
| Intercom / Paging | Allows internal announcement to SIP devices |
| Custom Dial Plan | Advanced routing rule using account-level dial plan configuration |
Use Cases
- Distributed team — ring a group of remote SIP extensions simultaneously; first to answer wins
- After-hours handling — time conditions route to IVR by day, voicemail by night
- Overflow routing — queue callers and spill over to external mobile numbers when queue times exceed a threshold
- Travel mode — activate Forward Always from your portal to forward all calls to your mobile while you’re on the road
- Backup SIP failover — Forward Not Registered ensures callers still reach you if your SIP device goes offline
Frequently Asked Questions
Are call queues free on IsraelNumber?
Yes. Call queues are included with every virtual number plan at no extra cost. There is no limit on the number of queues or simultaneous callers in queue.
Can I mix SIP extensions and external phone numbers in a ring group?
Yes. Ring groups can include any combination of SIP extensions registered to your account and external PSTN numbers (mobile or landline), in any country.
How quickly do forwarding changes take effect?
Dynamic follow-me changes made in your portal or via feature codes take effect immediately — the next incoming call will follow the new routing rule.
Can I route calls differently on Shabbat or Jewish holidays?
Yes. Time Conditions let you define routing by specific hours and days of week, including Friday afternoons and Saturdays, so calls can be handled appropriately during non-business periods.
What happens if my SIP device is offline?
If you have Forward Not Registered configured, calls will automatically route to your fallback destination — mobile, voicemail, or another extension — so no call is missed.
